Is it possible to pause the motion blur of everyday life, even just for a moment? To fully ground yourself in the space that you are in. Whether the ground beneath your feet may be wooden floors, subway tiles, hot concrete or overgrown pathways, can you take a breath, dig your feet deeper and focus on the view in front of you? This is not a mere act of reflection but an acknowledgement of the ever-present connection between our bodies and this land that so many call home.
In the exhibition the view from here, each artist has stitched together their untold stories and tangled thoughts tied to the Toronto landscape. A glimpse that flows alongside weeks of material experimentation, stove-top dyeing, solar dyeing and hammering with foraged flowers and leaves, cutting, ripping, ironing, hand-sewing, embroidery, drawing, carving and printing. Textiles of embodied fears, memories and dreams inhabit Spadina Museum, forming a lingering intimacy as an opportunity to muse upon the ways we move through and connect to nature within the cityscape.
