Soil, 2020

Synthetic and natural yarn.

Soil exposes the ongoing side effects of hormonal birth control through data-based weaving. This rough terrain of tapestries connects with a codex that fuses each symptom with a specific range of colours. The palette reflects the seasons, from the damp mud to a crisp breeze, as if to time-stamp each piece. This codex is public, to add to the famous debate around the drug that began in the 1960s. It is now widely accepted by the western world and used by millions of women. They choose to focus on the high peaks over the canyons that the medication creates; ignoring nausea, migraines, and other symptoms that they are assured will pass. Do they ever pass? Or do we just become numb to the pain?
